I open the door to a couple of strangers.
The first man asks me if I’m interested in finding out about God’s plan and invites me along to find out more while the second man proffers a leaflet.
I decline politely on the grounds that I’m a non-practising Catholic and Hub is an aethiest, both of which they may have taken as a personal challenge.
“But you’re obviously not happy with the religion you have, you sound like you’ve lost your way” the second man says somewhat concerned.
“I’m quite happy with being a lapsed Catholic, thanks” I tell him, cheerfully.
“Yes, but don’t you feel that you need extra guidance? we’re holding a meeting, it’s very close to here” says the second man, proffering the leaflet again.
“No, but if I do, I’d go and seek it.”
“Well, what about guidance from God on where things are going in the world?” proferring his leaflet for the third time.
“I’m quite happy with my own morals, thanks.”
“But what about God’s word, in the Bible?”
“Well, I feel that the bible was more symbolic in nature”
The man’s face blanches, but he quickly recovers himself.
“Well…” he begins,
“I just don’t think that the Bible was intended to be taken literally, and therefore, I don’t take it literally”
“But with all the bad things happening in the world, aren’t you interested in finding out God’s plan?”
“Well, if God is truly omnipotent, then I’m sure he’s doing it all for a reason and he must then have a plan. And, he wouldn’t have given humans free will if he didn’t intend them to use it.”
“Ah, um”, the second mans says, “Well, if you’d like to come along and find out more, he says, finally pressing the leaflet into my hand”
Then, the other man says, “by the way, do you speak Cantonese?”
